Valentine's Day is soon upon us, and with it comes the usual rollout of seven-course tasting menus, champagne flights and spurious aphrodisiac-based desserts 'guaranteed' to get the libido racing (or at least into second gear), all at a snip of £125 per person.

That's all very well if your pockets are as deep as Roman Abramovich's swimming pool, but what about the rest of us, the relatively less-well-heeled looking to make a romantic gesture without having to sell a kidney to pay for it? Here's a list of some places around the country where you can treat the lady this Feb 14th without breaking the bank or, more importantly, her heart.

These are hardly restaurants "around the UK" - most are in London and the home counties and as I live in the north east I shall not be eating at any of them. Here's a little known fact: people in the north, west, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland do eat out and we have some very good restaurants. Such is the ignorant London centric nature of this country.

Have dined at Clos Maggiore a couple of times and thoroughly recommend it. At normal times the food is good value and delicious. I have dined both upstairs and in the conservatory and in some ways the upstairs has a more romantic atmosphere. If I get back to London I will be there again.
