Honey bees are no longer the cute, honey-producing bugs of yesteryear - these days, they're lean, mean killing machines that hunt in packs. "Africanised bees came out of experiments in Brazil and are now all over the American tropics," says Ian Craddock. "The bee sting is not much worse than a normal sting, but they're more aggressive - they can follow you for a mile or more, all trying to sting you. You have to not panic.

"If in a group, follow the leader's orders. This is no time for liberal debate - you do as you're told and this will most likely mean moving away from the bees along the trail you've just come, given that you know what to expect, as quickly as possible. You'll take some hits, but you have to move quickly, deliberately and under control - panicking will only cause more trouble."
